Introduction

Phu Quoc, an island located off the south coast of Vietnam, has been gaining popularity as a tourist destination. But is it worth visiting? In this article, we will share our honest impressions of Phu Quoc, taking you through our experiences and shedding light on the island's charm and drawbacks.

Our Impressions Of Phu Quoc

During our visit to Vietnam in February 2019, we decided to spend a few weeks on the largest island of the country, Phu Quoc. We were looking for a comfortable base by the sea, where we could work and relax. However, our expectations were met with a mixed reality. In this Phu Quoc travel blog, we will share our personal views to help you make an informed decision about whether to visit Phu Quoc or not.

Expectations Of Phu Quoc Before We Went There

Dave: Vietnam has some stunning islands, and Phu Quoc caught our attention! With beautiful beaches and decent internet access, it seemed like an ideal destination worth exploring. Let's travel to Phu Quoc!

Vanessa: We came across Phu Quoc while researching our trip, and it seemed like the perfect getaway - warm weather, pristine beaches, and a lively night food market. We were drawn to its tranquility compared to other bustling tourist spots in Vietnam. My expectations were high, and I couldn't wait to soak up the sun on the beach.

First Impressions Of Phu Quoc

Dave: Our arrival was uneventful, but upon reaching our accommodation, we noticed the presence of construction and a few mosquitoes. The area seemed quiet, which was a welcome change.

Vanessa: Arriving at Phu Quoc airport, we were greeted by the sight of tall buildings and beach resorts. It wasn't exactly what I had imagined - an unspoiled tropical paradise like Koh Lanta in Thailand. However, I decided to reserve judgment until the next day.

What Was It Like To Stay In Phu Quoc

Dave: Renting a moped was essential from day one, as it offered flexibility and allowed us to explore the island at our own pace. The area we stayed in seemed to cater more to Russian tourists, with Russian menus in restaurants. However, we managed to find everything we needed, including a night market and supermarkets. The rapid construction works taking place across the island were impossible to ignore, erasing the island's former charm.

Vanessa: Although our initial area lacked local authenticity, our stay was pleasant mainly due to convenient accommodation and the opportunity to connect with fellow travelers. Exploring the island on a moped was easy, despite the scorching midday sun. Unfortunately, the beaches and food didn't live up to our expectations. Finding a beach without an overload of infrastructure was a challenge, and most restaurants turned out to be average.

What We Thought Of Things To Do In Phu Quoc

Dave: Thanks to the mobility provided by the moped, we never ran out of things to do in Phu Quoc. However, the beaches were a disappointment due to the amount of rubbish and overcrowding.

Vanessa: As beach lovers, we were disappointed with the quality of the beaches on Phu Quoc. Sao Beach, touted as one of the best beaches in Vietnam, was marred by tons of garbage. Our expectations were shattered, and we constantly questioned the authenticity of the experience. On a positive note, we enjoyed exploring the night market and indulging in some street food.

What Disappointed Us About Phu Quoc

Dave: The foremost disappointment was the state of the beaches and the rampant development happening across the island. The two factors seemed intertwined, and it was disheartening to witness the destruction of the island's natural charm.

Vanessa: Coming from Greece, where beaches are exceptionally beautiful, the beaches in Phu Quoc failed to impress. From overcrowding to the lack of character, the beaches fell short of our expectations. The massive resorts dominating the coastline further contributed to the disappointment.

Why We Think Phu Quoc Is Popular With Foreign Visitors

Dave: Phu Quoc is marketed as an affordable winter sun destination for Europeans. The island has attracted a significant number of Russian tourists, with efforts being made to appeal to British visitors as well. While it may be a fantastic destination for those coming from Grimsby to escape the British winter, long-term travelers might find it underwhelming.

Vanessa: Phu Quoc's popularity among foreign visitors can be attributed to its visa-free entry and direct flights from Europe. The cost of living is reasonable, and the weather is favorable. However, the island's appeal lies more in catering to European tourists than offering an authentic Vietnamese experience.

Would We Go Back To Phu Quoc

Dave: Despite its shortcomings, I would consider returning to Phu Quoc for its suitability as a working base and the ease of getting around on a moped. The disappointment factor wouldn't be as significant, knowing what to expect.

Vanessa: Personally, Phu Quoc didn't leave a lasting impression on me. With other breathtaking islands in Southeast Asia waiting to be explored, I wouldn't prioritize a return to Phu Quoc.

Conclusion

Phu Quoc may not be the stand-alone holiday destination many envision it to be. However, if you are on an extended trip in Asia or seeking a winter getaway, Phu Quoc is worth considering. It provides the necessary amenities and an opportunity to explore at your own pace. Ultimately, the decision to visit Phu Quoc depends on your preferences and expectations as a traveler.
